Chhattisgarh emerged as a new state on the map of India on 1st November 2000 & this is how old the history of the Chhattisgarh Police as a separate entity is. Traditionally, Chhattisgarh has been a very peaceful tribal belt. However, the upsurge of Naxalism in the hilly and difficult terrain of the State poses a big challenge to the enforcement & development agencies today. Since inception, six new revenue districts viz., Dantewada, Kanker, Kabirdham, Koriya, Narayanpur & Bijapur have been carved out to supplement the administrative efficacy, making a total of 18 districts in the State. Besides these, Balrampur & Surajpur have been given separate identity of police districts to effectively deal with the problem that has attained considerable dimensions in recent times.

Whereas Shri SM Shukla, IPS, the first Director General of Police took pride in bringing up the infant PHQ, the present and the 6th Director General of Police Shri V ishwa Ranjan, IPS has added new dimensions to the Chhattisgarh police ushering in an era of police modernization and all-round professionalism. His extensive experience of serving the Intelligence Bureau for more than 20 years has helped the state manifolds. Shri OP Rathor, IPS, the 5th DG Police, with an eight long years of experience in the United Nations, contributed a lot besides being instrumental in establishing a ‘Counter Terrorism & Jungle Warfare’ School at Kanker. Other DGsP namely Shri RLD Yadav, Shri VK Das and Shri Ashok Darbari also helped police in overcoming the initial problems of the department.

The Government of Chhattisgarh has been supportive at all times to strengthen the police & make it more people-friendly. Besides the state budget, various schemes like PMF, SIS and 12th FC have helped the department to strengthen its infrastructure. The State Police Academy is coming up at Chandkhuri, at about 22 km from Raipur, to take over t he training of Dy.SsP and Sub-Inspectors. Chhattisgarh police now has a total 16 armed Battalions (CAF) including 7 India Reserve Bns. The IPS cadre strength has increased from 59 to 103. Besides 4 ranges viz; Durg, Bilaspur, Sarguja and Bastar, Raipur district is directly supervised by IG Police Intelligence. Realizing advantages of using Mine Protected Vehicles (MPVs) in heavily mined areas of Naxal influence, about two dozen MPVs have been added to the police MT fleet. The police mobility is on the rise. Number of sanctioned Police Stations has risen from 298 in November, 2000 to 392 in March, 2010. The Finger Print Bureau has been automated. All labs have been equipped with modern gadgets. The welfare activities, ranging from establishment of police petrol pumps to gas agencies, have enabled easy access to basic amenities of modern life at reasonable rates.

The teething problems of this new State are gradually taking a back seat. Police of Chhattisgarh is now better equipped, more in strength and determined to tackle the Maoist problem with focused approach.
