Cyber Security as Subject for All University by UGC 2013

WITH entire young generation spend-ing more lime in cyberspace and  likely to carry their transactions using internet, the issue of cyber security has assumed a great importance. Sensing need to create awareness among all college going students about securing cyberspace, University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to introduce Cyber Security as a subject in all the universities and technical institutions in tune with the recommendation as made by a Task Force on National Security System. UGC in its circular has asked all the Vice-Chancellors to introduce Cyber Security/ Information Security as a subject both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The task force headed by former Cabinet Secretary Naresh Chandra was set up in 2011 to review the working of the national security system, presented its report on May 31, 2012. It was asked to review existing processes, procedures and practices in the national security system and to suggest measures to strengthen the national security apparatus.
The task force had made an assessment of the security scenario facing the country before making the recommen dalions to the government.
11 had suggested that "UGC and AICTE would ensure that Cyber Security/Information
Security is introduced as a subject in the universities/tcchnical institutions at the under-graduate and posi-gradu-ale levels." Welcoming the move. Slate Cyber Security Expert Dr Harold D'Costa state that infact basics of cyber security should be started from school level. In cyber crimes India ranks 1 lth in the world. Three per cent of every cyber crime takes place in India. With conviction rate less than 0.1 per cent this has become a biggest menace, he opined while hoping that due to this measure a large number of youngsters would be able to safeguard our cyberspace and help agencies in detecting cyber crimes.
