UGC lowers NET eligibility marks

BOWING to massive pressure mounted by students who charged the University Grants Commission (UGC) with changing qualification norms mid-way for National Eligibility Test (NET) held in June, the UGC has released a supplementary list of NET qual i Hers where it has lowered eligibility marks. This has benefited an additional 1,685 students for junior research fellowships (JRF) and more than 13.500 students are eligible for lectureship. However. for Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, only six more students have been benefited.
This is the first time that UGC has revised NET results following protests from students that UGC had altered the qualification norms after the results were declared. UGC had increased the qualifying marks for ihe general category students to 65 ft after the results were announced, while the corresponding qualifying marks for OBCs was 60% and for SC/STs it was 55%.

The previous results announced by UGC awarded JRF to 3.625 students and eligibility for lectureship to 40.332 students.

Though many wril petitions were filed before various High Courts across the country, in most cases, the courts disposed of the cases following assurance of the UGC about reviewing the new norms. A committee under Prof Chouhan was named to look into the issue.

Thanks :-)
